1. MIDeC – International Museum of Ceramic Design
The MIDeC’s collection is a who’s who of Italian ceramic design. You’ll see stunning examples of strong earthenware from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries, all made right here in Lombardy. Think of it as a time capsule that captures the evolution of Italian design. But don’t let the historical significance fool you – this place is anything but stuffy.
The exhibits are presented in a clear and engaging way, and you’ll find yourself nodding along as you learn about the innovative techniques and artistic visions that shaped the ceramic industry. One of the things I love most about the MIDeC is the opportunity to learn about the talented individuals who made it all possible.
Names like Guido Andloviz and Antonia Campi are legendary in the world of ceramics, and their work is showcased here in all its glory. A key difference between earthenware and porcelain that you’ll discover here is that earthenware is made from clay, making it more durable for everyday use. Porcelain, on the other hand, is made from a fine white clay and is often used for more delicate pieces.
2. Sasso del Ferro and its funicular
Towering at a lofty 1,062 meters above sea level, the Sasso del Ferro is a dominant feature of the landscape. It’s no wonder it’s been a popular destination for locals and tourists alike for centuries. It also has a rich history. In the 1960s, the area was developed as a ski resort, complete with ski lifts. Unfortunately, due to the region’s relatively mild winters, the resort was eventually abandoned.
This mountain has been known by many names over the years, including Ferro di Cavallo and Scereda. Reaching the summit is half the fun. A charming cable car, the Cestovia Laveno-Poggio Sant’Elsa, whisks you up to a height of 974 meters.
From here, you’ll be treated to a panoramic terrace offering stunning views of Lake Maggiore, the surrounding Alps, and even as far as the Po Valley. Once you’ve taken in the view, there’s plenty more to explore. The Sasso del Ferro is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, mountain biking, paragliding and hang gliding, it has them all!
3. Pizzoni di Laveno
This trio of peaks, standing at 986m, 1018m, and 1035m respectively, forms a dramatic backdrop to Lake Maggiore. The trail is a popular choice among Lombard hikers, and for three good reasons: Stunning Views, Accessibility and Mild Climate.
To save yourselves some elevation gain, you shall drive to the small village of Vararo. This will allow you to enjoy a more relaxed hike of just 6.7km with a total ascent of 530m. We highly recommend this shorter route, especially if you’re looking for a casual outing.
The trail itself is well-marked and offers a mix of forested sections and open areas with incredible views. You’ll be particularly impressed by the panoramic vista from the highest peak. After your hike, treat yourselves to a hearty meal at the Rifugio De Grandi Adamoli, a cozy mountain hut with a warm atmosphere.
4. Underwater Nativity Scene
Ever dreamed of seeing a nativity scene teeming with fish instead of sheep? Well, dream no more! The charming town of Laveno Mombello on Lake Maggiore, Italy, offers a unique Christmas tradition – a stunning underwater nativity scene, or Presepe Sommerso in Italian. Just getting these hefty statues underwater is no easy feat. The heaviest ones, like the camel clocking in at over a ton, require multiple divers and cranes to be carefully submerged onto specially built platforms.
I recently had the chance to witness this festive spectacle for myself, and let me tell you, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Imagine strolling along the lakeside promenade, sipping on a warm cup of mulled wine, and gazing down at life-sized nativity figures resting serenely on the lakebed a few meters below. The nativity scene isn’t just a pretty sight; it’s a cherished local tradition. Witness the moving ceremony on Christmas Eve, where the baby Jesus statue is carried by procession and placed in a seashell cradle by divers, all illuminated by flickering torches.
Forget those miniature figurines on your mantle. The Laveno Mombello nativity scene features over 42 sculptures, all crafted from Vicenza stone and standing tall at life size. Throughout the display period, the lakeside comes alive with festive cheer. Expect live music, special events, and even a bonfire on the water for Epiphany. Plus, there’s a local legend: tossing a coin and landing it inside the baby Jesus’ seashell conch is said to bring good luck for the year ahead!
5. Laveno-Mombello Lakeside Promenade and Weekly Market
I’ve always been a fan of good markets, and Laveno Mombello’s weekly market is definitely one of my favorites. Held every Tuesday morning around Piazza V. Veneto, just steps from the lake, it’s a bustling hub of activity that adds a touch of vibrancy to this charming lakeside town.
The market offers a wide variety of goods, from fresh produce and local delicacies to handmade crafts and souvenirs. You can find everything from colorful scarves and ceramics to delicious cheeses and cured meats. And if you’re feeling peckish, there’s a dedicated food area near the train station where you can sample a variety of local specialties.
As you wander along the promenade, you’ll be greeted by stunning panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The crystal-clear waters of Lake Maggiore shimmer in the sunlight, inviting you to take a dip or simply admire their beauty. The promenade itself is lined with elegant buildings, palm trees, and colorful flower beds, creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere.
Laveno-Mombello’s Beaches

Almost every beach offers a wide range of facilities, including sun loungers, umbrellas, and a bar where you can grab a refreshing drink.
Cerro beach
The beach itself is a mix of soft, golden sand and lush greenery. The water is crystal clear and, as you swim, you can’t help but be mesmerized by the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. You will find no crowds, just the gentle lapping of the waves and the chirping of birds. It’s the perfect place to relax. In addition, there are a few restaurants and bars nearby where you can grab a bite to eat.
Le Madonnine beach
Le Madonnine Beach is a tiny, secluded cove tucked away beneath a rocky cliff. It’s not the kind of beach you’d expect to find in a touristy town like Laveno Mombello. There are no crowds, no loud music, and no vendors hawking souvenirs. Instead, you’ll find a peaceful oasis where you can relax and soak up the sun. From the beach, you can see the entire town of Laveno Mombello, as well as the surrounding mountains. It’s a truly breathtaking sight.
Ceresolo beach a.k.a. Dei Tedeschi beach
This petite beach, tucked away in a picturesque cove, offers a tranquil respite for sunbathers, swimmers, and anyone seeking a moment of peace. Of course you can rent a paddleboard or kayak and explore the lake. There are several small islands nearby or, if you prefer to stay on land, you can take a leisurely stroll along the lakeshore and admire the stunning views.
