Rocca Borromea, the magnificent castle perched on a hill overlooking the town is, absolutely, the main attraction on this destination. It dates back to the 13th century and is filled with fascinating exhibits and artifacts.

Renting a boat or take a ferry ride will allow you explore the near Arona and Partegora islet, a must-do. Back to the mainland, Angera host various significant museum and is a great starting point for different outdoor activities as hikes and cycling tours.

What to see in Angera

Luino is a treasure trove of sights to see. Don’t miss the vibrant Wednesday market, a feast for the senses. For lovely views, stroll along the lakeside promenade or take a ferry ride. 1. Borromean Fortress of Angera

Originally owned by the Archbishops of Milan, the fortress has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. Over the centuries, it has been expanded and remodeled by various noble families, including the Viscontis and the Borromeos.

Exploring the fortress’s various buildings, each with its own unique story (from the ancient square tower to the elegant halls decorated by renowned artists) you’ll feel like you’ve wandered onto the set of a medieval movie. The Hall of Justice is a must-see, home to a breathtaking cycle of frescoes painted by the anonymous “Master of Angera.” These frescoes depict the dramatic victory of Archbishop Ottone Visconti over his rivals.

The Hall of Fame houses a remarkable collection of frescoes from the 15th century, showcasing the talent of artists like Michelino da Besozzo. San Quirico Hill is another must-see attraction in Angera. Rising to an impressive 410 meters, this hilltop offers a unique blend of history and nature. Its geological origins can be traced back to ancient volcanic activity, with distinctive reddish, greenish, and chocolate-colored porphyry rocks. This museum showcases the most significant historical findings from the region, the first room is dedicated to prehistory, with significant evidence from the Upper Paleolithic to the Copper Age, including those found in the famous Grotta di Angera.

In addition to the numerous original finds, a Tactile Table has been set up that allows all visitors to touch, smell, and try some of the prehistoric techniques attested in the area. In the second room, the inhabited area of Angera in Roman times is illustrated. There is a significant amount of evidence of the culture, religion, and structure of the ancient vicus, as well as coins and finds that attest to the ancient trade relations with Central Europe and the Mediterranean.

Within the walls of the Civic Archaeological Museum, a special place has been created for young visitors. The MABA (Museo Archeologico dei Bambini – Angera) is a child-friendly space designed to spark curiosity and imagination. With interactive exhibits, hands-on activities, and a dedicated children’s library, MABA offers a fun and educational experience for kids of all ages.

5. Angera Street-Art
