Stresa

Contents

Stresa, on the western shore of Lake Maggiore, is often painted as a picture-perfect postcard town. Sure, it’s got the classic lakefront promenade lined with pastel-colored villas and all the typical shops you can watch in a romantic movie. But there is more, so much more.

One of the most unique things about Stresa is its proximity to the Borromean Islands. This archipelago of three islands – Isola Bella, Isola Madre, and Isola Pescatori – offers a diverse range of experiences.

Beyond the islands, Stresa is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. Mottarone is home to hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities. But let’s not forget the real star of the show: Lake Maggiore itself. This vast body of water is the best playground for water sports enthusiasts.

What to see in Stresa

For the history lovers, there’s the Borromeo Palace, a stunning Baroque palace that once housed the Borromeo family. Art fanatics can explore the Museo Rosmini of Villa Ducale, which showcases the office of Antonio Rosmini and the beautiful gardens. And for those seeking a bit of adventure, there are hiking trails leading up to the scenic Mottarone mountain.

1. Borromeo Palace

Borromeo Palace is a stunning Baroque masterpiece that transports visitors to a bygone era. This magnificent palace, built in the 17th century, is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the Borromeo family, who once ruled the region. Napoleon Bonaparte stayed at Isola Bella in 1797 after his Italian Campaign.

From April 11 to 14, 1935, the palace hosted the Stresa Conference, a meeting between Benito Mussolini, Pierre Laval, and Ramsay MacDonald aimed at maintaining political order in the face of the German Anschluss. These state representatives met in the Music Room and established the so-called Stresa Accords.

The palace, characterized by a T-shaped plan, is dominated by an 80-meter-long facade. Inside, the palace houses a collection of paintings by renowned artists such as Luca Giordano, Francesco Zuccarelli, and Pieter Mulier. The gardens feature a variety of terraces, statues, and plant species, offering breathtaking views of the lake.

2. Villa Ducale (or Bolongaro Palace)

Villa Ducale in Stresa began as a modest residence built in the late 18th century by Giacomo Filippo Bolongaro, a self-made man who had amassed a fortune in the tobacco trade. Inspired by his grand residence in Frankfurt, Bolongaro constructed a luxurious villa on the shores of Lake Maggiore.

Following Rosmini’s death, the villa was acquired by the House of Savoy, who renamed it Villa Ducale. After the departure of the royal family, the villa experienced a period of decline. However, it was eventually purchased by the Rosminians, who restored it and established the “Centro Internazionale di Studi Rosminiani“. Today, visitors can explore the villa, its beautiful gardens, and the museum dedicated to Antonio Rosmini.

The Villa Ducale in Stresa is typically open to the public from March to October and there is no entrance fee. This is a great attraction to see if you are planning a money saver trip.

3. Pallavicino Park

Originally a private residence acquired by Italian statesman Ruggero Bonghi in 1855, the Villa Pallavicino underwent significant transformations over the years. The Pallavicino family, who acquired it in 1862, expanded the estate, built roads, and transformed the simple residence into a magnificent 19th-century neoclassical villa.

Home to over 60 species of mammals and birds, the park offers a unique opportunity to observe animals in a natural setting. Many of the animals were already present when the Borromeo family took over, while others have been rescued or added to the collection. And more, the park boasts a rich botanical heritage, with a variety of plant species thriving in the unique climate of Lake Maggiore. The Flower Garden, with its rose garden and seasonal blooms, is a particular highlight.

The park even offers a petting zoo where visitors can interact with animals like goats, sheep, and llamas, providing a fun and educational experience. Typically open from March to November, with daily hours from 10:00 AM to 5:30, prices vary depending on the season and age.

4. Mottarone

Peak of Mottarone during winter

Mottarone, towering over Stresa and Lake Maggiore, is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. This majestic mountain even hosts an amusement park. The easiest way to reach the summit of Mottarone is via the Mottarone Cableway, a scenic journey that offers stunning vistas of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Hiking trails of varying difficulty wind through the mountain’s forests and meadows, offering opportunities to explore the natural side of the region. In the amusement park you will find a thrilling alpine coaster and a scenic chairlift.

In the winter months, Mottarone transforms into a popular ski resort, offering downhill skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing. After working up an appetite with a hike or a visit to the fun park, you can refuel at one of the mountaintop restaurants, specialties comprehend mushrooms, chestnuts and game.

5. Borromean Islands

Borromean Islands are a trio of enchanting islets: Isola Bella, Isola Madre, and Isola dei Pescatori each have their own unique vibes and attractions. The Borromean Islands are easily accessible by boat from Stresa. There are regular boat services that depart from the town center, taking you on a scenic journey across the lake. You can purchase individual tickets for each island or a combined ticket that allows you to visit all three.

The most famous of the Borromean Islands, Isola Bella is renowned for its stunning Italian gardens, baroque palace, and magic landscapes of the lake. As you approach the island, you’ll be captivated by the sight of the terraced gardens, adorned with statues, fountains, and exotic plants. The palace itself is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, filled with ornate rooms and a collection of valuable art.

Isola Madre is a botanical paradise, hosting one of the largest botanical gardens in Europe. Wander through exotic plants from around the world, including towering palm trees, vibrant flowers, and fragrant citrus groves. The island is also home to a peacock sanctuary, where you can admire these majestic birds in their natural habitat.

The smallest of the Borromean Islands, Isola dei Pescatori (or Isola Superiore) is a charming fishing village with a timeless atmosphere. The narrow cobbled streets all around let you admire the colorful houses, and enjoy a traditional meal at the old restaurants. The island offers a peaceful escape from the chaos of mainland Italy.
